During the “XLII Workshop on Geometric Methods in Physics” conference organized by the Faculty of Mathematics at the University of Białystok, Professor Stanisław Lech Woronowicz, an outstanding mathematical physicist, former employee of the University of Białystok and the University of Warsaw, and member of the Polish Academy of Sciences, was awarded the Wigner Medal. The ceremony took place on July 3 this year at the Faculty's headquarters.
Prof. Stanisław Woronowicz worked at the Faculty of Mathematics and Computer Science of the University of Białystok from 2011 to 2015. He participated in numerous conferences in the Geometric Methods in Physics series and collaborated scientifically with Professor Anatol Odzijewicz, founder of the Białystok mathematical physics group, with whom he also had a personal friendship.

The Wigner Medal is awarded for outstanding achievements in the field of mathematical physics. It was established in 1978 by Professor Arno Bohm in honor of Nobel Prize winner Eugene Wigner. The purpose of this award is to “recognize outstanding contributions to the understanding of physics and chemistry through precise mathematical tools in the spirit of Eugene Wigner.”
For the first time in history, the Wigner Medal award ceremony was held at the Faculty of Mathematics of the University of Białystok, which is a great honor. The event was attended by, among others, Darlene Wiley-Bohm, wife of Professor Arno Bohm.
The Wigner Medal is funded by the Group Theory and Fundamental Physics Foundation. The initiator of the establishment of this foundation was Prof. Arno Bohm.
Since 2020, the Wigner Medal has been awarded in cooperation with the organizers of the Workshop on Geometric Methods in Physics, and since 2024, Texas A&M University in the United States has also joined the initiative.
The event at the UwB campus was attended by Prof. Che-Ming Ko, a representative of Texas A&M University, and the entire ceremony was hosted by Prof. Wolfgang Schleich from the Institut für Quantenphysik Universität Ulm in Germany.
