They allow you to calm down, cut yourself off from negative stimuli, and concentrate better. As part of the “UwB Accessible University” project, acoustic booths have been set up in two university departments. In turn, acoustic armchairs have appeared in all reading rooms of the University Library. Students and employees of UwB can now use them.
"This project is a response to the growing number of requests from members of the UwB community for an accessible place where they can calm down and cut themselves off from stimuli that disrupt concentration (noise, excessive lighting, crowds, etc.), as well as enabling the undisturbed functioning of people with different needs," explains Dr. Patrycja Goryń, head of the Department of Support for People with Special Needs at the University of Bialystok.
She adds that two booths and 14 acoustic chairs were purchased as part of the project.
“In accordance with the diagnosed needs, the acoustic booths were set up at the Faculty of Law and the Faculty of Economics and Finance. Importantly, the booths are mobile, so their location can be changed as needed,” adds Dr. Patrycja Goryń.
As part of the same project, the university also purchased acoustic armchairs for the University Library. Thanks to these, it has been possible to create friendly and accessible workspaces in the reading rooms, which help to reduce noise and minimize distractions from the surrounding environment. The armchairs have been placed in all of the Library's reading rooms.
“Both solutions support accessibility and improve the comfort of learning and working for members of the academic community, and above all, they allow people with special needs to use the library's resources or rest during breaks in the best possible conditions, with maximum exclusion of negative stimuli,” adds a representative of the University of Bialystok.
The largest university in Podlasie plans to purchase a third acoustic booth.
The “UwB as an accessible university” project is financed by the European Funds for Social Development 2021-2027 program, co-financed by the European Social Fund Plus.
